Hull Identification Number (HIN)

One of the most frequently asked questions here at the owners forum is "What is a hull number and how do I read it?" The answer is "it depends" and rather than reinventing the wheel trying to describe it, the attached PDF was created from a very good explanation I found at the Pacific Handicap Racing Fleet web site:

Location of the Hull Numbers on Endeavour Sailboats
Since 1972 boats have been required to have a Hull Identification Number (HIN) permanently attached to the transom on the starboard side above the water. Endeavour sailboats have theirs molded into the gelcoat in the upper right hand (starboard) corner where the deck, transom, and freeboard meet. After many years these can become difficult, if at all possible, to read.

In 1984 a new regulation was passed which requires the HIN number to also be permanently attached in a second unexposed location. This location can vary from boat to boat:

• Under the forward shower. Can be seen by removing the swing out bin.
• On the forward bulkhead in the cabinet.
