1979 Endeavour 32
Name: Kevin Coon kkcoon@worldnet.att.net
Boat Name: Liqid Asset
Year: 1979
Size: 32' sloop
Date Purchased: 1986Boat History:
Two previous owners.Experience:
1972 to Present. Lived aboard, cruised, and raced as a kid. Got my own boats later. Lived on my Endeavour for 10 years - cruised, raced, and gunkholed extensively in Florida, Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean aboard her. Started out single, got married, had a daughter, the quarter berth made a great crib, the sink made a good baby bathtub, we put a harness on her, attached her to the jacklines and let her run wild.I raced the boat quite a bit for several years and found her very competitive in club races as long as the legs weren't too short (1/2 mile or less). In larger races (non spinnaker division) we usually took trophies-always finished in the top 30%. Long distance racing was mixed due to my strategies (live and learn) our best was 2nd in the TransAt Daytona to Bermuda race,(great crew made up for marginal strategy). Our worst was still a lot of fun and at least we didn't DFL.
The boat stays comfortable and competitive in heavy weather, I never got her rung out real well below about 7kt apparent.
We don't live aboard any more, we're weekend sailors now and trying to get used to not having everything handy (food,clothing...)
Boat Review/Upgrades:
The longer I have her the better I like her, (just like my wife).
She's comfortable at sea.
Sleeps Great.
Sails well-if you can sail, she can usually take a trophy.
Enough storage to stow six weeks of supplies for four people using conventional foods.
Tracks well downwind in heavy air.MODIFICATIONS:
There are a lot more that I've done over the years-these are a few of the ones that matter most day to day.
- Roller furling
- Internal halyards with stoppers
- Second set of cockpit winches
- upsized rigging
- Secured wiring inside of mast (I can sleep when the boat rocks!)
- Added drains to deck by cockpit (where the water collected)
- Leeboards on main cabin bunks
- Two anchor rollers on bow
- Added rope locker under foredeck for second anchor
- Manual windlass - should have installed an electric
- Added rope locker for stern anchor
- Cruisair central air and heat (needed it in Florida)
- Adler Barbour Cold Machine (need cold drinks anywhere)
- 65 amp alternator (AC Delco $43.00 at an auto parts store, easy to install and last for years)
- Automac voltage regulator
- Folding Prop 16" (don't remember the pitch)
- Hasler servo pendulum gear
- Structural reenforcement of hull foreward of mast
- Added stringers below shroud chainplates
COOL TOYS:
- GPS - we offer sacrifices to keep the magical GPS gods happy
- Autohelm 3000 - you can talk mean to it and it still drives the boat (unlike my wife)
- SEA 222 Single Sideband- call your boss from Haiti and tell him you're running a couple of weeks late-some people just don't appreciate the common courtesies!
- Roll up Avon Deflatable-Deflate it, roll it up, and tie it just foreward of the companionway for passages and it makes a decent dodger.
