Endeavour 32 Engine History
Date: August 24, 1997
From: Robert Chamberlain rchamber@mail.snip.netI am in the process of purchasing a 1979 Endeavour 32. The specification sheet indicates the boat has an 18 HP Yanmar. Could someone tell me if that means the engine is a 2QM20? The current series of Yanmar's are GM's.
Also does anyone have a jib roller reefing system on their boats? If so how satisfied are they will their present system. Thanks for any information. I was hoping to find a page such as this.

From: Robert Chamberlain rchamber@mail.snip.netI am still trying to identify the engine on the boat I am buying. I couldn't find a nomenclature plate. It only has one "v" belt in the front. Where should the nomenclature plate be? On the 20GM the plate is on the front of the engine. Any help would be appreciated.

From: Bob Barnhart insure4u@earthlink.netI suspect that the engine is a 2QM20 as that the 32 came standard with a 12 HP model and for an additional $750.00 you could add the 20 Hp 2QM20 (in 1977). Yanmar also made a 2QM30 at that time. I am sold on my experience with the 2QM20 as I have rebuilt mine once due to some water in one piston which was a result of the exhaust riser being too low as I loaded down the boat. Other things to watch for are cracks around the corners of thetransom and backstay. My fiberglass man stated that when the boat was laid up they did not use enough glass wrapped around the inside corners of the >transom which resulted in gel coat cracks. I don't they were structural though. I also had to replace the top to the water tank due to delamination. Please let me know if I can be of any help.

From: Robert Chamberlain rchamber@mail.snip.netPractical Sailor evaluation of Endeavour 32 said the "bigger Yanmar became standard in 1978". In 75-77 the 12 HP Yanmar was standard. PS mentions that "some boats of the period were equipped with the Westerbeke L-25 engine, and others with the Yanmar 2QM20. I was told by a dealer that the 2GM was also made in 1979. I have looked at the engine in the boat I am buying and it is not a 2GM so that leads me to believe that it is the 2QM20 but I believe that the 2QM20 and the 2GM are only rated at 18 HP (actually the Service Manual for 2GM says 15HP at 3600 RPM's). I was trying to locate someone who has a 2QM20 to get a description of it and the location of the nomenclature plate. A 2GM has two drive belts. The one in the boat I am buying only has one.

From: ESGIII@aol.comBob B,
How did you remove the engine to perform the piston work you indicated?

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comAll Endeavour 32s came with diesel engines, but many different engines were used. In the 1975, 76, and 77 models, a 12hp Yanmar (1QM) deisel was standard equipment--fine for flat calms but not enough power to push to windward in any wind or sea. Some boats in the same period were equipped with the Westerbeke L-25 engine, and others (1977-ish) with the Yanmar 2QM20 (22hp 2-cyl) which was available in the late 70's. While the bigger Yanmar became standard in 1978, a 3-cylindar Universal deisel of about 24hp was also an option in late model boats. In the early 1980's Yanmar replaced the QM series with the GM series engine. The 2GMD replaced the 2QM and Yanmar added the 3GMD (22hp 3-cyl) to the line. Our 1982-E32 has the 3GMD series diesel engine and is fitted with a geared transmission. Many boats today however have upgraded their engines with the 2GM20 (18hp) and 3GM30 (27hp) engines which Yanmar introduced in 1983.
If you have any questions about your Yanmar, I found Bob Schroer @ Yanmar to be very helpful. You can contact him at:
