Atkins & Hoyle hatch gasket material
Date: August 19, 1998
From: Andy Egeressy egeressy@worldnet.att.netI would appreciate suggestions on replacing the hatch gaskets of my 1982 Endeavour 37...eg obtaining the proper gasket material, should it be fitted?, best way to install, etc. Two of my hatches have slight leaks. I've called Atkins & Hoyle ( makers of the hatches, I believe) in Toronto, but haven't heard from them.

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@aolcomI ordered gaskest material from Atkins & Hoyle about 2 years ago and they sent them to me free of charge. What they sent was a long piece of round rubber about 3/4" in diametere. The idea is to clean out the old and glue in the new. Keep trying. Let me know.

From: Andy Egeressy egeressy@worldnet.att.netI heard back from the hatch maker about gasket material...sorta...it wasn't very helpful.
They sent me a "Freeman Marine Equipment" catalog...which must be the new name for Atkins and Hoyle...and a suggestion that I try CR Laurence for gasket material.
I see there is 9/16" diameter foam gasket material in the BOAT/US catalog. Do you think that is the correct replacement for our Atkins and Hoyle Hatches?

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@aolcomThat size sounds about right. You might measure the width of the channel in the hatch to double check. As I remember, it was about the diameter of a Tootsie Roll.

From: Andy Egeressy egeressy@worldnet.att.netI'm looking for a description as well as a source for the foam gasket material used in the Atkins & Hoyle hatches in my 1982 Endeavour 37. The gasket material appears to have a round cross section of approximately 1/2" in diameter (perhaps 9/16"), however mine has hardened somewhat and compressed so it is difficult for me to estimate the original size.
I called Atkins and Hoyle and have also E-Mailed and wrritten to them in Toronto, however I have no reply regarding the gasket material. They did send a catalog, but with no information about the gaskets.

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@aolcomSorry to hear that it's been difficult. I'll look thru my stuff. I know I have an A&H catalog and some gasket materila here.

From: Steve Glick BOATSRI@cyberzone.netThe sail is about 1 foot short of the top. I also do not believe that Brooks put a French mast on the original boat but I could be wrong. It is about 55' from step to top. The sail is the original and I'm replacing it this winter.

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comOur 1981 E32 (although not a 33 like yours) has a Kenyon mast. I don't know if this is typical to the 32 but as you may know, Kenyon is no longer around. I don't know when they went out of business.

From: Jerry Bernath Bernathj@pocketmail.comI have been in touch with Atkins & Hoyle via e-mail. Their e-mail is atkinshoyle@dapa.com Their web site is located at http://www.atkinshoyle.com They sent me their latest catalog last week and I have e-mailed them some questions and am waiting for some answers on my ports before I order some items. My E42 needs new gaskets on all the ports and so does my aft hatch. Their catalog has these items listed. My suggestion is to e-mail them.

From: Jerry Bernath Bernathj@pocketmail.comI have a update for you.
I called Atkins & Hoyle and will be placing a order for port and hatch gaskets as well as the glue called Siltprene to hold them in place. I found out that all the opening ports and the hatches on my 42 were made by them BUT they never made any fixed ports. Endeavour must have contracted out to make my 6 fixed ports by someone else. I also learned that Atkins & Hoyle uses a silicone product made by GE, #1200, to set and seal all the acrylic in their ports and hatches. I will be ordering this and rebuilding my main salon fixed ports.
My recommendation for anyone needing parts from them is to call Sandy Cowan at 416-596-1818. She has been there for 30 years and was very helpfull. Not only did she send me the catalogs last week but she explained the entire procedure for replacing the gaskets on the ports and hatches.
Let the other Endeavour owners know of this.

From: Andy Egeressy egeressy@worldnet.att.netThanks for the replies, fellow sailors. In between re-tieing my boats for Georges and evacuating... I called Atkins and Hoyle again last week. They answered this time and were very helpful. I expect to receive my gaskets from them soon.

From: Carl Hibbard Chgypsy@aol.comHello to the group,
Would someone please advise whether the opening hatchs with handles labeled "CAMPA" are Atkins and Hoyles.

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comIn the September issue of Practical Sailor (V25, N17/18) there is a review of Atkins & Hoyle hatches by Nick Nicholson in the Offshore Log. As some of you know, he is the Editor at Large for the publication and is reporting on various pieces of equipment and experiences aboard his boat Calypso as he circumnavigates. Bottom line is that he gives the an 8 out of 10 rating and has several maintenace recommendations.

From: Carl Hibbard Chgypsy@aol.comIf you have looked at prices for aluminum framed hatchs you are probably still experiencing sticker shock, as well as finding out that there aren't any real good applicants for replacements that come close to the original dimensions without a lot of work.
Are your aluminum frames and latching handles still intact ?
Your E37 had Attkins and Hoyle (Canada- listed in E32 pages) hatchs if between '77 and '82. There were two designs, the older one is no longer available. The later design was/is available in '82. They were changable to go forward or backward as far as the hatch itself, and you can purchase replacement support rods. One writer said that the sizes were just a hair larger requiring some woodwork modification at the opening...this also written up in E32 pages.
Many have replaced the weatherstrips (me included) and reglazed with new Lexan, on either design. This is obviously the most cost efficient if dollars are a factor. Hardest problem for the Lexan replacement is the proper sealant and its retention to the aluminum frame. If you are a confirmed DIYer and want more instruction let me know.
However, Atkins & Hoyle will do all of it for you (for a fee of course), typical problems would be removal which -could -can-was be a bear. Second was the sheet vinyl covering the holes while the hatchs were out precluded the non use of the boat. One guy used the hatch as a pattern and made plywood covers...so he could do during his winter storage period.
My decision (and my wife agreed) after looking at everything involved was to leave the crazed Lexan alone and have me reseal. "She doesn't like people standing on the docks and looking through anyway."
NOTE : Materials for DIYers.
Just the new Lexan with the grade/tint, and minimum dollar requirement wound up being about $250...they did cut to size though. I'll supply source and contact person if anyone wants to obtain from the Dayton, OH area.
My new weather strips were sourced through "Beckson" as bulk cut, they have lots of sizes and types, and direct shipped with billing through West Marine.Hope this helps a little, let us on the Endeavour list know....

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comAtkins Hoyle will sell you the correct gasket material at a reasonable price. As for the lens, you can ship the old hatch to them and they'll do it. They quoted me roughly $200. You can find them at:

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comEndeavour Owners,
One of our members, Mike Miller, owns Salty Dog Discount Marine in Norfolk, VA and sells 1/2" hatch gasket material for $1.50/ft (Manatline part # RP-0235) The adhesive is RTV Silicone and can be purchased at an automotive store cheaply.
