Hawse Pipe / Deck Cap

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comEndeavour Owners,
We have a deck cap that covers the 'hole' that the anchor rode passes through on its way below deck in the bow. It's essentially a metal 'flip' cap that is screwed to the deck and covers the hole drilled through the deck. There is nothing to protect the deck core where the rode passes through and am concerned about moisture creeping into the laminate.Has anyone run across a fitting or pipe of some sort that protects the core from the rode and moisture and integrates with the deck cap? We plan on sealing the exposed portions but am looking for something more substantial to protect it, such as a short section of pipe that would pass completely through the deck.

From: Carl Hibbard Chgypsy@aol.comHi Paul,
Your hawse pipe question. Can you get your hands on another "lower fitting"? If you can ( and I have ) file or rout out the opening to match the OD of the fitting. Put the two bases together with some sealer, the one upside down through the deck is your protection for the substrate.

I believe that the suggested method of sealing a hole through a deck core is with epoxy resin applied directly to the exposed core material. Try the "West System" brand (sold at all reputable marine stores). Regards.

Depending on the diameter of the hole, yu might try using PVC pipe as a sleeve, and bonding to the deck where it passes through, the PVC pipe is very durable and lightweight, it is also easy to bond to.

Get some Marine Tex and apply over the laminate. Rather than a pipe, next smooth in some 3M 5200 over the Marine Tex. The laminate will now be sealed and protected from anything you can dream up.

We put a short (5 inch ?) section of 2" schedule 40 plastic pipe in the hawse. It stands "proud" of the deck about 1 "...to keep water from going below...and extends into the anchot chain locker about 3 inches. This keeps moisture and "gunk" from running down the under side of the anchor well. The poly pipe is glued to the hawse hole which goes thru a teak base under the windlass. Best regards.

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comThanks for the feedback. After mulling it over for a bit I've come to 2 possible solutions. The first is using PVC pipe as you mention. The second idea is to get a thru-hull with a mushroom shaped head, cut it to length so that the flange (or head) sits flush with the underside of the deck. The rounded edges should help allow the rode to pass through freely and give it a nice finish.
We'll probably epoxy any exposed core and then use a sealant to glue the section in place.
