PLAN-B

OVERVIEW

Maybe the perfect Caribbean live aboard boat for a couple. Explorare is a customized Endeavour 37, outfitted and upgraded over 4 years with well over $120,000 invested. Some of these upgrades are outlined below.

Originally built in 1983, this Endeavour 37 Plan B is regarded as one of the best all-around live-aboard vessels. Weighing in at over 20,000 lbs., with a full keel of 8,000 lbs, the Endeavour is the kind of safe, heavy, solidly built fiberglass cruising vessel you can rely upon. Her draft of just 4-½’ makes it easy to access the best anchorages in the islands.

The Endeavour 37 is a two-cabin layout, with master V berth forward and another berth on the aft port side. Huge salon, exceptional galley layout and an almost office like navigation station, combine to make for an exceptional living space. With 11’ 7” of beam and 6’ 6” of headroom, she feels spacious when down below. Super comfortable for 2-4 passengers, it is possible to sleep up to 6. At 37’, she is the perfect blend of sufficient size, without being too much. Room for everything you need, but not pushing into the 40’+ range that drives up operating costs.

AUXILLARY

The primary powerplant is a 50hp Perkins 4-108 diesel. The Perkins is legendary and this particular one tops the list of upgrades. New in 2014, the engine has only 220 hours. Coupled to the super reliable Borg Warner transmission, she pushes Explorare comfortably forward at 5.5 knots, when turning 2000 rpm. This is done while only using 0.8 gallons per hour from the 55-gallon fuel tank. Just to keep track, a new Faria fuel gauge is installed by the main panel. A new starter was installed in 2018. In the engine room, you will notice a massive blower system. The twin discharge blower can move 600 cf of air per minute, clearing any fumes out the vents and maintaining a safer space when the engine is running. For further peace of mind, a new raw water filter was installed in 2018. For easy maintenance, the vessel also has an electric oil change pump system. Below the engine, a massive 2000 gal/hr bilge pump clears any water, while the second shower sump provides an additional 750 gal/hr capacity. The primary bilge is wired directly to the batteries, to ensure it cannot be accidentally shut off at the panel.

Sail Plan & Deck Hardware

The sail plan on the Endeavour is, by some reviews, slightly undersized. To counter this, Explorare has a 150% genoa and a new main sail to provide exceptional speed for her size, recently pushing 8-9 knots under full sail on beam reach, in 18 knots of true wind. The new Mack Sails main, lazy jacks and Mack Pack make storage easy. The Genoa, recut and refurbished, fits on a new ProFurl roller furler, installed in 2016. New Harken tracks and oversized Garhauer cars manage the Genoa sheets easily.

Sailing this Endeavour is a dream. To start, all the running rigging is new and lines are managed by new Selden and Harken winches. The two primary winches are new Selden S48. On the cabin top is another new Selden S30, which manages the main halyard and mainsheet, both locked down on a new Spinlock XAS rope clutch. Lines are stored neatly into a beautiful line bag, with custom pocket for your winch handle. The Selden winches are the newest design, allowing the sheet to be pulled in, while still in the tailer, making for safer and less awkward maneuvers by eliminating holding a tensioned sheet while placing in the self-tailer.

One of the most remarkable upgrades is the traveler arch. The main traveler has been relocated onto a custom heavy-duty arch, set even with the bimini and dodger. This upgrade makes for an incredibly improved, open feel to the cockpit. The traditional placement of the mainsheet, in front of the companionway, always proved to be inconvenient. With the traveler and mainsheet relocated, the cockpit is more modern and open, providing easy movement into and from the companionway. All new blocks and lines manage the mainsheet. New outhaul and topping lift lines run through the boom, repainted when the mast was re-stepped in 2017. New halyards and new jib sheets run through all new oversized Series 65 Garhauer Uni-Body blocks. Two new Harken 8 winches are on the mast for use as needed. When required, folding nylon mast steps allow easy access to the stack pack. There is a new flag halyard on the starboard side.

HULL & DECK

Not just a strong sailing vessel, she is also stunningly beautiful, with all new custom AwlGrip on her hull and topsides done in 2017. Hundreds of spider cracks were hand ground and refinished when she was painted. The custom Grey hull and traditional Oyster White topsides look exceptional with the epoxy finished teak. New stainless rub rails finish off the sides.

When in the cockpit, the crew will be protected by a new Sunbrella bimini and dodger, with the fabric all matching the stack pack, headsail UV cover, winch covers, windlass cover and hatch covers. All new spectra lifelines circle the vessel with turnbuckles to allow for easy adjustments. New Selden covers are installed on the shrouds. A custom 12v charging station is accessible at the helm. Even the wheel has been upgraded with custom white padded wrap for comfort. On top of the bimini is 300w of solar power, installed in 2018, feeding to a 30amp charge controller.

The transom on a traditional Endeavour was difficult to access, with a backstay in the center and dinghy davits crowding the space. Explorare has been customized with a split backstay custom built by Nance and Underwood. Further, the davits have been removed, fully opening up the transom. A custom dive boarding ladder serves for access to the now open transom. The engine mount and a new lift crane are on the starboard side.

When it's time to use the dinghy, the new 2017 aluminum floor Newport 9’ dinghy is easily inflated and lightweight enough to handle by hand over the side. To remove the need to carry gasoline onboard, the dinghy uses a new 24v electric motor, providing 96lbs of thrust. Two dedicated batteries are charged off a custom charging station under the helm seat. When inflated, the dinghy can be protected by its custom grey cover, or when deflated it can be kept neatly in the waterproof deck bag.

electrical

Batteries are critical to a sailboat and Explorare has a huge capacity. Three massive 4D AGM batteries, new in 2018, run the vessel. The wiring is in place to quickly and easily add two more, bringing total battery capacity to the levels needed for two weeks without sun, shore power, or running the engine. The windlass and macerator run off a separate AGM battery with a dedicated charger and a custom LED displaying current voltage. With 4 charging processes, the batteries can be managed in a variety of ways. There is a Pro-Nautic charge controller which serves as the primary charge management system on shore power. As a backup, the massive 3000w pure sine wave inverter also has a charge function. The engine alternator is another option, but so is the 30amp solar charger.

With all new LED lighting, low power NEMA 2000 electronics and new high efficiency 12v Engel fridges, the vessel uses minimal electricity for her size. Of course, the hot water heater can use some power, but even the AC has been upgraded to a high-efficiency Webasto FCF 5000, using just 4.4 amps. To make the AC more effective, aluminum/air bubble insulation has been pressed into every available overhead space, increasing insulation rating and reducing UV through the fiberglass.

plumbing

Along with electricity, water and plumbing are critical to comfortable live-aboard conditions. Explorare has a Lil Wonder Watermaker, to feed a 100-gallon fresh water tank. With that tank capacity, it is easy for 2 people to go a week or more, before replenishing the supply. The head has been upgraded to a Jabsco electric head with a built-in macerator. The macerator runs to a Y-valve for pumping directly out to sea, when offshore. If needed, the 10-gallon blackwater tank is available, with an additional macerator to reduce problems with clogged plumbing. All of this plumbing was refit in 2015 and 2016. The holding tank has a new Xintex level monitor, so you know when it is time to empty the tank. The head has a new faucet/shower set up, new custom teak shower floor, new shower curtain and new LED lighting. With tons of storage, solar vent fan and new countertop, this head design is an exceptional feature for just a 37’ vessel.

Galley

In the galley, the features continue to impress. With dual Engel 12v drop in fridges, one new in 2015 and one in 2018, there is massive cold storage capacity. If wanted, one (or both) easily operates as a freezer, while the other can be set to run as a fridge. The 2-burner gimbled propane stove was installed in 2017, includes a nice oven and provides a great cooking platform. A huge dry storage is located next to the sink. This dry storage is set up for adding a compressor and thus a 3rd fridge, if ever needed. Next to the galley, as well as attached to the interior mast, are new fire extinguishers, with two more stored behind the starboard settee. The galley also boasts a smoke and CO2 detector.

Just to port of the galley is the navigation station and the aft berth. The nav station has a great office like feel, with a new ICOM VHF mounted close by, connected through a new wiring to a new VHF antenna on the mast. The water tank level monitor is found here, along with 12v and 110v plugs to provide power as needed. The aft berth is long and often used as storage, when just two people are aboard. Under this berth are the watermaker, inverter and batteries.

Accommodations

Forward of the aft berth and galley is the main salon. With a settee on each side, combined with an ingenious folding table, it is easy to accommodate 5-6 guests for dinner. All new custom cushions are found both here, as well as on each of the berths. The custom portlight covers provide shade over the 10 new Beckson portlights installed in 2015. A new Webasto 5000 AC was installed in 2016. This system is very energy efficient and easy to service through an access panel in the main salon. It can feed up to 3 vents, as needed, including the main salon and each cabin.

Storage abounds here, behind and under the settees. The floor, replaced in 2016 with all new laminate, easily comes up to provide access to the centerline water and fuel tanks. The water tank was new in 2014 and the fuel tank was pulled, cleaned, had a new pick up line installed, then coated with new West Systems epoxy in 2018. All new LED lighting accents the newly painted ceiling and upper woodwork. To starboard, a custom swing mounted TV is fitted flush, but can rotate out to provide a great entertainment source when desired. Wiring is in place for speakers, both in the cockpit and salon, but currently a portable Bluetooth speaker has been the choice. If wanted, new Pyle marine speakers have already been installed in the cockpit.

Moving forward to the master berth, there is a great hanging locker behind the door. Inside, storage areas are found to both port and starboard, providing a lot of options for liveaboard sailors to arrange clothing. The all new custom mattress with custom fabric is exceptionally comfortable. Under this huge v-berth are two large storage areas. In the forepeak is the chain locker. As with the rest of the vessel, new LED lighting has been installed, 12v fans provide air circulation and the AC can be directed to this cabin as needed, for those hot summer months.

Anchoring & Docking

Back outside on the foredeck, you will find the new 1000w anchor windlass, again, powered by its own dedicated battery. With 150’ of 5/16” chain and 200’ of 5/8” rode, the primary anchor is an oversized CQR, providing incredible holding power. In case needed, a second anchor with an additional 50’ of chain and 200’ of rode is ready to go on the bowsprit. With dual heavy anchors, new oversized anchor shackle swivels, new anchor roller, extra chain and extra rode and anchor snubber, you will feel comfortable keeping Explorare in place in all conditions. When at anchor, Explorare offers another feature almost unheard of on 37’ vessels – bi-lateral stabilizers. On each side, Magma roll stabilizers reduce the amount of motion by 75% or more. Each with its own telescoping arm, these stabilizers tame rough conditions and allow for easy conditions aboard and restful sleep.

When you arrive at the dock, new fenders are quickly pulled from their custom fender holders on each side. The 8 new dock lines are all sized correctly and ready to position her in any slip, providing redundancy and orderly appearance. While relaxing at the dock – or at anchor, the cockpit provides a comfortable entertaining space. An elegant new SeaTeak folding table anchors the space. A large Magma grill is ready to go on the stern rail. The starboard 10lb propane tank has new hose and regulator and solenoid, feeding the grill and galley stove/oven. To port is storage for a second 10lb cylinder, which together provides 3-4 months of cruising capacity. Cockpit cushions, new in 2016, provide comfortable seating.

Electronics & Navigation

When again you set out, the all new Garmin package will show you the way, spot obstacles and steer the perfect course. NEMA 2000 upgrades were all installed in 2017. This includes a new Garmin 741sx chart plotter with built-in sonar. The Garmin 18 HD radar can see through darkness and fog, providing a clear vision of the surrounding seas. A new Garmin GNX wind transducer is mounted atop the mast, providing accurate True Wind and Apparent Wind information. Impressively, the Garmin Class B GHP 12, Compact Drive Unit autopilot drives the boat off its multi-axis gyro compass. Suitable for vessels over 2x the size of Explorare, the oversized hydraulic linear autopilot can even auto-tack and gybe, through 1610 lbs of force to the rudder. When needed to drive the vessel in heavy weather, this extra power is critical, especially compared to normally foud wheel pilot systems, which are underpowered for this size vessel. You will really appreciate this upgrade when the weather turns bad and you want the auto-pilot the most. Further, with the control arm connected directly to the rudder stock, even if the wheel steering cables or quadrant were to fail, the autopilot could still be used for control. With Garmin it is easy to network in an iPad or iPhone, providing additional screens to view and control critical vessel systems, even driving the autopilot off the Garmin Quatix watch.

Summary

Almost nothing on Explorare has been overlooked. The new mast steps make it easier to get to the mainsail. All hatches and winches have custom Sunbrella covers that match the bimini/dodger, as well as the Genoa UV cover and the stack pack. Even the shrouds have custom Selden covers, installed after the mast was removed, repainted, rewired and reinstalled in 2017. This is when the new deck lighting was also installed.

For a couple looking to live aboard and cruise the Bahamas and the Caribbean, Explorare may be the perfect choice. Already heavily upgraded and ready to go, she will carry you to distant shores and adventures with comfort. Many Endeavours, as well as similar vessels, can be purchased for $30-40k. However, all will require many thousands and thousands of dollars in additional work to get just a fraction of the way to what is already installed new on Explorare. This is a vessel that will empower your dreams to be real and take you to new adventures. Explorare, in Latin, means “to Explore” and this captures the essence of her nature.
