Rudder Pulling
Date: October 3, 1998
From: David Burka dlb@delbe.comGreetings
Have been looking at the endeavor web page. We have a 1985 40 under contract and found the information about the fuel tank problems most helpful. If the boat goes to settlement we will join and provide the info to your web page.During the survey yesterday we discovered a strong pull to starboard when under power. If you let go of the wheel she just started turning. We also noted there was a trim tab on the rudder on the starboard side. Don't know whether this is creating the problem or was put on to solve it. Have you or anyone else experienced this problem? I note on the web page there are no return email addresses so I could not write owners directly. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but my info on the 40's is a bit thin. What I can do is send a request to other owners of 40's. Let me know what happens (or doesn't happen) as there are a number of members that don't get the e-mail. I could forward on their >names and address' to you.

I forgot what your question was.... was it excessive weather helm? All of my tech data is on the boat, in Puerto Rico. Our E40 is apparently one of the few (?) boats that survived Hurricane Georges. :>) The previous owner bought it when his first E40 (he only had it 3 weeks!) was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in '89. Having a boat in the Caribbean between Jul-Oct is not for the faint-at-heart.OTOH, we're in Michigan until November. :>(
About all I can say for sure is that we have a Perkins 4-108, standard shaft, with a 3 blade feathering Martec prop. This is a good performing combo under all but fairly heavy headwinds/seas, i.e. >30kts. No excessive wx helm under sail or power. Big plus: Great backing power from the Martec!
' Wish I could provide more info to you now ..... but I didn't want you to feel that nobody cared. We do.
best regards,
Fred V. (s/v Liberty... E40)

Heard a lot of suggestions, but ended up rejecting the boat due to the steering. I considered it a serious safety issue and did not want to buy the boat with out a guarantee that the problem could be solved. I think the proper prop will solve the problem, but can't be sure. The owner had never mentioned this problem so when we had the boat out of the water we were not looking for this specific problem. I still love the boat and have asked our broker for a list of other 40's around for sale. Also here the 42 is a great boat.Again, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out with the E40. They are a nice boat. I think someone had listed a 40-something on our web site--you might want to take a look at it. If you need anything else, let me know. We have a lot of E40, E42, and E43 owners in the Forum.

From: Manfred Schmuck mschmuck@mgl.caHi, I just found this site and would like to add this. My boat is an E 32, 1980, 3 cylinder Atomic diesel (27 HP) and a 3 bladed prop. I experience that strong pull to port under power only. I have a new propshaft and cutlass bearing. I have no idea why it's doing this. the shaft seems to be nicely centered.

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comDid this 'pull' just begin after the new shaft?

From: Manfred Schmuck mschmuck@mgl.caHi Paul,
I bought the boat last summer and replacing the shaft was part of the refitting. So I don't know if the boat was doing the same thing before. That 3 bladed right hand prop is probably the culprit. It's walking the stern to starboard at a good rate.
